A vanilla bean →
squashed: In the spice aisle, I saw a little glass container that said “Vanilla bean.”  It contained one vanilla bean.  It cost $12. Apparently vanilla is actually an orchid.  The flowers need to either be manually pollinated or pollinated by a special kind of Mexican bee.  The flowers only last a few days, but the fruit takes eight to nine months to ripen.  Apparently vanilla is a lot less...
